☕ Istighfar — Seeking Forgiveness 🌙

Assalamu Alaikum,

Astaghfirullah — “I seek forgiveness from Allah.”

It is one of the simplest phrases in Islam, yet its meaning is profound.

Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness) is more than something we say after committing an obvious sin. It is an acknowledgment that we are imperfect servants of Allah, who are prone to mistakes, shortcomings, heedlessness, and sins. Also, it means that we continually need His forgiveness.

The Prophet ﷺ, despite being the best of creation, regularly sought Allah’s forgiveness.

So what place should istighfar have in our own lives?

Allah says:

“And whoever does evil or wrongs themselves then seeks Allah’s forgiveness will certainly find Allah All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

— Qur’an 4:110

Notice what Allah promises.

The person described has already done wrong. Yet the door has not closed.

They turn back to Allah and find Him All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Islam does not teach us to become comfortable with sin. But neither does it teach us to despair because of it.

We repent and return.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“By Allah, I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari 6307

If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought forgiveness so frequently, istighfar deserves to be part of our daily worship, not merely something reserved for major mistakes.

Astaghfirullah (أستغفر الله) means:

“I seek forgiveness from Allah.”

But sincere istighfar is not simply repeating a phrase.

When connected to repentance, it means recognizing the wrong, regretting it, asking Allah to forgive it, and intending not to return to it.

And if the sin involved another person's rights, those rights must also be addressed.

The tongue says Astaghfirullah.

The heart turns back to Allah.

Prophet Nuh عليه السلام told his people:

“Seek your Lord’s forgiveness, for He is truly Most Forgiving. He will shower you with abundant rain, supply you with wealth and children, and give you gardens as well as rivers.”

— Qur’an 71:10–12

These verses show that istighfar is connected not only with forgiveness, but also with Allah’s blessings and provision.

We should not reduce istighfar to a formula for getting worldly things. Its first purpose is seeking Allah’s forgiveness.

But Allah Himself tells us that turning back to Him can bring blessings into our worldly lives as well.

One of the dangers of sin is not merely committing it.

It is becoming comfortable with it.

Istighfar interrupts that process.

Every sincere Astaghfirullah is an admission:

What I did was wrong. Allah knows it. I need His forgiveness.

That awareness keeps the heart connected to repentance.

Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayh.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

“I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him.”

A short phrase worth making part of every day.

You will make mistakes.

The important question is what happens afterward.

Do you ignore them?

Justify them?

Or return to Allah?

Allah has left the door of repentance open.

Keep returning through it.

Astaghfirullah.
