When Your Iman Feels Low
☕ Editor’s Note
Assalamu Alaikum,
Some days worship feels easy.
Salah has focus. Qur’an affects the heart. Dhikr comes naturally.
Other days, it can feel very different.
You pray, but your mind wanders. You know what you should do, but your desire to do it feels weaker.
This raises an important question:
What should a Muslim do when iman feels low?
📖 Qur'an Reflection
Allah says:
“The true believers are only those whose hearts tremble at the remembrance of Allah, whose faith increases when His revelations are recited to them, and who put their trust in their Lord.”
— Qur’an 8:2
The Qur’an describes iman as something that can increase.
Faith is not simply a feeling we either have or do not have.
It is strengthened through remembrance of Allah, revelation, worship, obedience, and trust in Him.
This also means our spiritual state will not always feel exactly the same.
🕌 Hadith of the Day
The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked, "What deeds are loved most by Allah?" He said, "The most regular constant deeds even though they may be few." He added, 'Don't take upon yourselves, except the deeds which are within your ability."
— Sahih al-Bukhari 6465
When iman feels low, our instinct may be to suddenly overhaul our entire life.
But consistency is often more valuable.
Two pages of Qur’an every day.
Regular dhikr.
Guarding the five prayers.
Small acts of charity.
Small does not mean insignificant.
💭 What Is Iman?
Iman (إيمان) means faith or belief.
At its foundation is belief in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and divine decree. This constitutes the Six Articles of Faith (Arkan al-Iman)
But iman is not merely intellectual acknowledgment.
It affects the heart and is reflected through how we live.
And like many things that require care, iman needs to be nourished.
Neglect has consequences.
So does consistent attention.
🌧️ When Worship Feels Dry
Not every salah will bring tears.
Not every page of Qur’an will produce an emotional reaction.
And not every period of your life will feel spiritually intense.
This is important because worship is not dependent upon emotion.
We worship Allah because He is worthy of worship—not simply because worship feels good at that moment.
Sometimes continuing to pray, remember Allah, and avoid sin when you don't feel spiritually energized is itself an important act of faithfulness.
🔧 Rebuilding Your Iman
When you notice your iman weakening, return to the foundations.
Protect your salah.
Read a manageable amount of Qur’an consistently.
Make istighfar.
Reduce sins you know are affecting your heart.
Spend time around people who remind you of Allah.
Learn something about your religion.
Make sincere dua for guidance.
You don't necessarily need a dramatic spiritual reset.
Start by repairing the basics.
⚡ Quick Islam Wisdom
Don't measure your iman only by how you feel.
Look at what you do.
Did you pray when you didn't feel like praying?
Did you walk away from something haram when you wanted it?
Did you remember Allah after forgetting Him?
Did you repent after falling into sin?
The struggle to return to Allah matters too.
🤲 Dua of the Day
The Prophet ﷺ frequently made this dua:
Ya Muqallibal-qulub, thabbit qalbi ‘ala dinik.
“O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.”
— Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 2140
Even the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah for firmness of the heart.
We should too.
☕ Final Sip
A period of low iman does not mean you should give up.
It means your faith needs attention.
Don't wait until you feel spiritual before worshipping Allah.
Keep the salah.
Open the Qur’an.
Say Astaghfirullah.
Make dua.
Leave the sin.
Then do it again tomorrow.
Iman is not only found in moments when you feel close to Allah.
Sometimes it is demonstrated by continuing to walk toward Him when you don't.
Until tomorrow,
Stay steadfast on the Straight Path.
