You Don’t Have to Be the Most Important Person in the Room

Humility — Tawadu’

Assalamu Alaikum,

The human ego is impressive.

It wants credit for the group project, the last word in the argument, recognition for doing something good—and possibly an apology from someone who doesn't even know we're upset.

Islam offers a different approach:

Tawadu’ — humility. Not thinking you're worthless. Just remembering you're not the center of the universe.

A difficult concept for the ego's PR department.

☕ THE MORNING SIP

Humility doesn't mean walking around pretending you aren't good at anything.

You can be talented, successful, wealthy, knowledgeable, or accomplished and still be humble. The difference is understanding where it all came from.

Your intelligence. Your health. Your opportunities. Your ability to earn. Even the next breath. They're blessings from Allah, not evidence that you're inherently better than the person next to you.

Confidence says, “Alhamdulillah, Allah blessed me.”

Ego says, “Obviously.”

📖 QUR’AN REFLECTION

Allah says:

“Do not turn your cheek in contempt toward people, nor walk proudly upon the earth. Surely Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful.”

— Qur’an 31:18

In other words: Walk confidently. Just maybe not like you personally own the sidewalk.

🌙 HADITH OF THE DAY

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“No one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises him.”

— Sahih Muslim

Interesting trade. The world often tells us to constantly prove our importance. Islam says sometimes the path upward begins by lowering the ego.

🧠 QUICK SIP

Humility shows up in surprisingly ordinary moments.

Letting someone else speak. Admitting, “I was wrong.” Taking advice from someone younger. Doing something good without making sure everyone knows about it.

And perhaps the advanced level:

Losing an argument without immediately preparing the sequel.

🤲 DUA OF THE DAY

“Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not place in our hearts any bitterness toward those who believe.”

— Qur’an 59:10

Because a heart with less resentment has a little less room for ego too.

☕ FINAL SIP

You don't need to shrink yourself to be humble.

Just remember that whatever you've been given came from Allah—and it can disappear just as quickly. So do great things. Work hard. Build. Lead. Succeed.

Just remember Who gave you the ability to do them.

Until tomorrow,
Stay steadfast on the Straight Path.
