☕ Love of Allah 🌙

Assalamu Alaikum

We say that we love Allah. But what does loving Allah actually look like? We can't see Him in this life, yet everything we have—our life, family, health, provision, guidance, forgiveness and every good thing we've ever experienced—comes from Him. Loving Allah isn't simply an emotion we try to create. It's something that grows as we learn who Allah is, recognize what He has given us, worship Him, and begin choosing what He loves over what we want. The goal isn't to stop loving people or enjoying this world. It's to make sure that no love becomes greater than our love for the One who gave us everything else.

Allah says:

Islam doesn't teach us to live without love. We love our spouses, children, parents, friends, homes and the countless blessings Allah has given us. But those loves have an order.

At the center is Allah. Everything else we love is ultimately something He gave us. When we see our blessings that way, enjoying them can actually remind us of the One who provided them.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

The Prophet ﷺ described faith as having a sweetness.

One part of experiencing it is putting our love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ above competing loves. That doesn't happen overnight. It develops as our relationship with Allah develops.

Start by getting to know Him.

Learn His names. Think about His attributes. Read His words in the Qur'an. Notice His blessings in your life.

Ar-Rahman — The Most Merciful.
Al-Ghafur — The Most Forgiving.
Ar-Razzaq — The Provider.
Al-Wadud — The Most Loving.

Think about how many times Allah has provided for you without you asking, protected you from things you never knew about, covered sins nobody else knows, and allowed you to return after you wandered.

The more you truly know Allah, the more reasons you discover to love Him.

Allah gives us a practical test:

Love shows itself through choices.

Sometimes loving Allah means getting out of bed for Fajr when you would rather sleep. Sometimes it means walking away from something haram that you badly want. Sometimes it's lowering your gaze, controlling your tongue, giving away money you could have spent, or quietly making salah while the rest of the world continues around you.

You won't always feel intensely spiritual while doing these things.

But choosing Allah when another desire is pulling you elsewhere can itself be an expression of love.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a successful career, a beautiful home, financial security, a good marriage or an enjoyable life.

The danger begins when something Allah gave us becomes more important than Allah Himself.

A career shouldn't make us neglect salah. Money shouldn't make us accept haram. A relationship shouldn't require disobedience to Allah. And losing something from the dunya shouldn't make us believe we've lost everything.

Everything we love in this world is temporary.

Allah isn't.

One way to grow your love for Allah this week is surprisingly simple: notice Him in your blessings.

When you eat, remember Who provided it. When you come home, remember Who gave you shelter. When you laugh with your family, remember Who placed them in your life. When you make tawbah, remember Who left the door open.

Instead of allowing blessings to distract you from Allah, let the blessings lead you back to Him.

The Prophet ﷺ taught this beautiful dua:

Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wal-'amalalladhi yuballighuni hubbak.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّكَ وَحُبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّكَ وَالْعَمَلَ الَّذِي يُبَلِّغُنِي حُبَّكَ

“O Allah, I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and deeds that will bring me to Your love.”

— Jami' at-Tirmidhi

It's a remarkable thing to ask Allah for:

Help me love You more.

You don't have to stop loving the dunya's good things. Enjoy the halal things Allah has given you. Love your family deeply. Build something meaningful. Appreciate your home, your health and your provision.

Just remember where all of it came from.

Because one day, everything we love in this world will be left behind.

And we will return to the One who gave it to us.

Love the blessings. But love the Giver more.
