Conduct in Mosques

Assalamu Alaikum,

You walk into the masjid looking for peace.

Then someone’s phone starts playing a ringtone during salah at approximately concert-level volume. It happens.

The masjid is the house of Allah—a place for salah, Qur’an, dhikr, learning, and community.

And like any important space, there’s some etiquette.

☕ THE MORNING SIP

Masjid manners start before you even arrive.

Wear clean clothes. Take care of your hygiene. Avoid strong odors. Enter respectfully and keep your voice reasonable.

The Prophet ﷺ specifically told those who had eaten garlic or onion to stay away from the masjid because the odor could bother others.

The basic idea is simple:

Don't make your presence someone else's distraction.

📖 QUR’AN REFLECTION

Allah says:

“The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, pay zakah, and fear none but Allah.”

— Qur’an 9:18

A masjid isn't just another building. It's a place dedicated to the worship of Allah. Treating it differently makes sense.

🌙 MASJID 101

A few habits go a long way:

Keep conversations at a respectful volume. Silence the phone. Avoid walking directly in front of someone praying. Don't disturb people reading Qur’an or making dhikr. Keep the space clean.

And when you enter, pray two rak‘ahs of Tahiyyat al-Masjid before sitting when appropriate.

Nothing complicated. Mostly awareness that other people came to worship too.

🧠 QUICK SIP

Good masjid etiquette isn't about becoming the unofficial Masjid Behavior Enforcement Department.

In fact, correcting everyone else while forgetting your own manners somewhat defeats the purpose.

Sometimes the best contribution you can make to the masjid is simple:

Leave the space a little better—and a little more peaceful—than you found it.

🤲 DUA OF THE DAY

When entering the masjid:

“Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik.”

“O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.”

— Sahih Muslim

A beautiful reminder of what you're actually walking into.

☕ FINAL SIP

The masjid belongs to the entire community—the elderly worshipper, the exhausted parent, the new Muslim, the energetic five year old, and the person quietly trying to reconnect with Allah.

Bring your best manners, make room for others, and please… double-check that ringtone.

Until tomorrow,
Stay steadfast on the Straight Path.
