What Was Written for You Will Never Miss You
☕ Editor’s Note
Assalamu Alaikum,
Today’s issue is about Divine Decree.
You didn't get the job.
The business didn't work out.
A plan you spent months preparing fell apart.
Or something unexpectedly good happened that you never could have planned.
Islam gives us a framework for understanding all of these moments: Qadr.
Qadr is the belief that Allah has complete knowledge and decree over everything that occurs.
But that raises an interesting question:
If everything is already written, what exactly are we responsible for?
📖 Qur'an Reflection
Allah says:
“No calamity befalls the earth or yourselves without being written in a Record before We bring it into being. This is certainly easy for Allah.”
— Qur'an 57:22
Nothing catches Allah by surprise.
Not the setback you didn't anticipate. Not the opportunity that appeared unexpectedly. Not the events that completely changed the direction of your life.
Allah knew them before you did.
The next verse explains one wisdom behind knowing this:
“˹We let you know this˺ so that you neither grieve over what you have missed nor boast over what He has granted you. For Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful”
— Qur'an 57:23
Qadr gives perspective to both loss and success.
🕌 Hadith of the Day
The Prophet ﷺ taught Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنه:
“Know that what has missed you was never going to befall you, and what has befallen you was never going to miss you.”
— Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi
That's an extraordinary way to look backward at life.
There are things we still think about:
What if I had done this?
What if that had worked out?
We can learn from our decisions without believing that Allah's decree somehow slipped past us.
What reached you could not have missed you.
💭 So… Why Make an Effort?
This is where Qadr is sometimes misunderstood.
Believing in Allah's decree does not mean sitting around waiting for life to happen.
The Prophet ﷺ planned, worked, traveled, prepared for battle, sought treatment, and took precautions.
Islam teaches us to use the means Allah has given us while recognizing that the outcome belongs to Him.
Apply for the job.
Study for the exam.
Build the business.
See the doctor.
Make the dua.
Then understand that you control your effort, not the final result.
🧠 A Better Way to Think About “What If?”
There is nothing wrong with examining a mistake and learning from it.
But endlessly replaying the past is different.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that when something happens, rather than saying “If only I had done such-and-such…”, a believer should say:
QaddarAllahu wa ma sha'a fa'al.
“Allah decreed, and whatever He willed, He did.”
— Sahih Muslim
Learn the lesson.
Make better decisions next time.
But don't spend your life trying to renegotiate something that has already happened.
⚡ Quick Islamic Wisdom
Qadr creates an interesting balance:
Before something happens:
Plan. Work. Make dua. Take action.
After something happens:
Accept Allah's decree. Learn. Adjust. Continue.
That distinction matters.
Qadr isn't an excuse for passivity. It's perspective after you've done your part.
🤲 Dua of the Day
One of the most comprehensive duas from the Qur'an is:
Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil.
حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
“Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Protector.”
— Qur'an 3:173
It doesn't mean we stop taking action.
It means that after taking action, our ultimate reliance is on Allah.
☕ Final Sip
There are things you wanted that never came.
And things you never expected that became part of your life.
Qadr teaches us not to see either as random.
Do what is required of you today.
Make good decisions. Take the means. Ask Allah for what you want.
And when the outcome arrives, remember:
What was written for you could never have missed you.
And what missed you was never written for you.
Allah knows the full story. We only see the page we're on.
Until tomorrow,
Stay steadfast on the Straight Path.
