Bilal ibn Rabah رضي الله عنه
Assalamu Alaikum,
Before his voice called Muslims to prayer, Bilal ibn Rabah رضي الله عنه was an enslaved man in Makkah being tortured for believing in one God.
His response? “Ahad. Ahad.” One. One.
His persecutors wanted him to change one belief. Bilal wouldn't change one word.
☕ THE MORNING SIP
Bilal رضي الله عنه was among the earliest Muslims.
His acceptance of Islam came with an enormous price. His owner, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, reportedly had him dragged into the scorching desert, pinned beneath a heavy stone, and ordered to reject Islam.
Bilal kept repeating: “Ahad. Ahad.”
Eventually, Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه purchased Bilal and freed him.
The man once treated as property would soon hold one of the most recognizable positions in Islamic history.
Quite the reversal.
🕌 THE VOICE OF MADINAH
After the Hijrah, Bilal رضي الله عنه became famous as the mu’adhdhin of the Prophet ﷺ—the man who called the Muslims to salah.
Think about that transformation. Once, his voice was supposed to be silenced. Now that same voice echoed through Madinah: Allahu Akbar.
Islam had a habit of rewriting social rankings.
🌙 A REMARKABLE HADITH
One morning, the Prophet ﷺ asked Bilal:
“Tell me of the best deed you did after embracing Islam, for I heard your footsteps before me in Paradise.”
Bilal explained that whenever he made wudu, he would pray whatever Allah enabled him to pray.
The act of maintaining spiritual purity and offering voluntary prayer immediately afterward carries immense weight in the sight of Allah. Islamic teachings also note that performing wudu well and praying two rak'ahs with a focused heart is a means of earning Paradise.
— Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim
No massive public achievement. No complicated formula. Just a quiet act of worship done consistently.
Apparently, consistency has pretty good acoustics in Jannah.
🧠 QUICK SIP
Bilal’s story is often remembered for endurance.
But there’s something else worth noticing: Islam changed what determined his worth. He had been enslaved, persecuted, and looked down upon. None of that defined his standing with Allah.
Faith did. And centuries later, nobody remembers the social status of most of Makkah’s elite. But Muslims around the world still know the name:
Bilal.
🤲 DUA OF THE DAY
“Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims.”
— Qur’an 7:126
Rabbana afrigh ‘alayna sabran wa tawaffana muslimin
Short. Powerful. And especially fitting for a man who refused to surrender his faith.
☕ FINAL SIP
Bilal رضي الله عنه went from being tortured for saying “Ahad” to calling an entire city toward the worship of Al-Ahad — The One.
His circumstances changed. His status changed. His freedom changed.
But the belief never did.
Sometimes one word is enough to define a life.
Ahad.
Until tomorrow,
Stay steadfast on the Straight Path.
